5th Annual Slush Awards — Short Video of The Year

  |   SLUSH STAFF

With most snowboard videos clocking in under 20 minutes these days, there’s not much time to overthink—so it all comes down to impact. Does it grab you right away? Does it make you want to ride? Sure, we can analyze the tricks, the spots, and the never-been-dones, but if a video doesn’t hit you in the chest from the first watch, it probably won’t stick.

blitz! - THE NORTH FACE:

You know how in The Departed, all these amazing actors keep popping up in every scene and you’re kind of thinking to yourself “Geez, I can’t believe they got all these people to be in this thing. This is sweet.” “Blitz!” is the snowboarding equivalent of that. Cole Navin, Kennedi Deck, Blake Paul, Spencer Schubert, Austin Smith, and Jake Blauvelt come together with the help of snowboards contemporary auteur extraordinaire, Colton Feldman, for a celebration of all things snowboarding.

"blitz!" a film driven by Spencer Schubert and Blake Paul, features Kennedi Deck, Austin Smith, Cole Navin, Jake Blauvelt (and more), as they highlight the energy of snowboarding— from the streets of northern Sweden, to the backcountry of the southern Andes and everywhere with snow in between.

Director and Editor: Colton Feldman
Cinematography: Colton Feldman, Brock Nielsen, Cole Navin, Jake Price

Swamp Donkey - Dustin Craven and Mateo Massitti:

Dustin Craven and Mateo Massitti put an absolute beat down on their hometown of Revelstoke, BC, and surrounding vicinity. Throughout a mediocre winter up north, in the interiors of the west, this tight knit Canadian crew showcased what happens when patience and perseverance shines through. The main message of this video is to emphasize how serious snowboarding is, with no fun involved…

Filmed and edited by Evan Lavallee. Produced by Evan Lavallee, Dustin Craven, and Mateo Massitti. Art by Luke Sudderman.

HORSEPOWER - Henna Ikola & Lolo Derminio:

Lolo and Henna show what can happen when two friends gain a filmer and lose all sense of personal safety. Horsepower is perhaps an easter egg, since this movie could have been subtitled: a film about energy. There’s endless amounts of it, there’s not a dull moment, never a time where you don’t want to just smile and pick up your board to go ride.

Monster Energy presents Horsepower: An all-women’s snowboard video starring Henna Ikola, Lauren “Lolo” Derminio and featuring Ylfa Rúnarsdóttir.
A film by Calle Hasselblatt.

Wishing Well  - Paid Programming:

If there is such a thing as a Canadian Curse—the industry putting the blinders on for our friends up north—we think this crew can be the one to lift it. Don’t call it a homie video because we’ve moved past that, this crew knows what they’re doing. Nothing in these videos is played out, not the spots or the songs and certainly not the riders. Paid Programming is, at best, a preview into what snowboarding can look like going forward. At worst, it’s still a breath of fresh air.

Having hit us hard last year with 2023’s “Tuesday's Child” Paid Programming is back at it again with “Wishing Well” a continuation of their onslaught in the streets. This time crossing the border due to low snow and making the most of an inconsistent winter.

Starring Quin Ellul, Jesse Jarrett, Marty Vachon, Dan Bubalo, Stefan Alvarez, Nick Elliot, Adam Franks, Tanner Davidson, Austin Johnson, Kim Cote, Mike Rosart and friends.

Filmed by Alex Bielawski, Jesse Jarrett , Quin Ellul and Pat Quesnel
Edited by Jesse Jarrett & Quin Ellul

Pickpocket - Sinister Films:

Pickpocket will rob you of your sense of reality. Ok, I’m sorry that one was too easy. But there’s nothing easy about the tricks in this video. So much of the hype landed—rightfully—on Sam Anderson’s jaw dropping ender part. But to overlook any part of this video is doing it a disservice. From start to finish, this one will blow your mind.

A film by Alex Havey
Featuring Sam Anderson, Colton Carroll, Conor Carroll and Bobby Stitt
Supported by Never Summer Industries, Honey Wax, Yes Snowboards, Focus Boardshop and Proper Thread

Anthill - Dylan Okurowski:

Anthill, like Wishing Well, could easily be mistaken for a homie video. We caution you against making that mistake. Homie vids imply a lack of seriousness, a lack of dedication. We assure you, there is perhaps nobody more dedicated than Dylan Okurowski. Anthill is his latest offering.

Featuring: Jeff Holce, Henry Macomber, Caleb Kinnear, Ben Marmer, Norm Schoff, Luke Lund, Derek Conti, Keegan Hosefros, Keenan Cawley

Filmed/edited by: Dylan Okurowski
