Last winter was rough. It seemed like the only place with snow was far northern Scandinavia. I booked a ticket to meet the VG crew and extended my trip to join Dom, Kas, and Will. Naturally, as soon as I committed, the weather changed—rain followed by a 20-30-degree plunge to freezing temps.
The crew wasn’t fazed. “It will be fine,” they said. We spent days shoveling in a relentless drizzle, setting up spots for the crew. Despite the miserable weather, the vibes were high, and my jokes were hitting—nothing like a new audience, right?
When Dom’s turn came, the temps swung. The rain had frozen the snow into ice, and the glass he planned to ride turned out to be thinner than expected. While shoveling on the roof, a car pulled up. Instinctively, Dom slid down the roof, but a cracked pane shattered under his weight. Luckily, he didn’t fall through, but the spot seemed ruined.
Dom wasn’t about to quit. We hit a hardware store, patched the broken pane with plexiglass and duct tape, and hoped for the best. It held for the most part, but we all knew—including Dom—that if he put an edge into the glass, there was a good chance it would shatter. As light faded and my last day ticked away, Dom kept going. He landed a few solid tries, but in true Dom fashion, he said, “I can do it better.” And he did. The shot you see here on the cover is the make he was searching for. Dom is an incredible person, and I’m beyond lucky to have spent over 10+ years shooting with him. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of their first North American cover. Love you, Dom!
