Save a Brain—Brain Injury Awareness: An Interview With Kelsey Boyer

From the Save A Brain Desk:
March is Brain Injury Awareness Month, a crucial time for us at Save A Brain. Each year, roughly 30 million brain injuries occur globally. Of those affected, an estimated 40-60% are suffering with long-term mental and physical effects, some without even realizing the connection. This month is a time to propel our mission forward by bringing these effects to into public knowledge. We want to change the lives of those suffering as well as the lives of their families.

We have a couple special ways to get involved for the month of March.

The Helmet Pledge: Commit to wear your helmet for the next 30 days.
A peer-to-peer fundraiser: The top three who raise the most will win themselves a new GoPro!

Our founder, Kelsey Boyer is here to speak more on what we have planned for the month, what we have accomplished, and where we are going next.

What is Brain Injury Awareness Month, and why is it so important to Save A Brain?

K: Brain Injury Awareness month aims to raise awareness about brain injuries, their causes, symptoms, and the importance of prevention, treatment, and support for individuals and families affected by these injuries. This month is important because this is THE number one injury in the entire world and individuals are suffering in silence every single day. We are here to break the stigma surrounding these invisible injuries and create a safe space for those in need.

We have some cool ways to get involved for the month, let's start with the Helmet Pledge. What is it, who created the art, and what was the inspiration?

K: The helmet pledge is for anyone who is passionate about wearing their brain bucket or for the individuals who are helmet curious and want a good challenge. You join our pledge by donating $20 and you receive a thank you, SAB pin and customized stickers by the man, the myth, the legend, Dave Doman. He is a magical human on this earth that also had his own encounter with a TBI. It’s truly a full circle moment to connect on our pains and turn it into purpose. Power in numbers and it shows everyone out that there is a life after a brain injury.

Another way to get involved is the peer-to-peer fundraiser, what was the inspiration behind that, and how can someone create their own?

K: This is a good opportunity for anyone that has ever wanted to help Save A Brain and join a cause that is bigger than yourself. You can use your voice and help fundraise money for our programming so we can continue to save as many brains as possible. Whether you are recovering from a concussion, a caregiver of someone affected or simply love your brain this is a very inspiring way to use your voice to create change. To show our gratitude for those individuals the top 3 winners have a chance to win a brand new GoPro!

We have other ways to get involved as well, what are a couple of those?

K: Lets start it off by saying that for the entire month of March SCHEELS is matching up to $5,000 and Montucky is matching up to $1,000 so every dollar goes a long way and there are different ways to help generate funds. Our peer to peer, helmet pledge, purchasing merch, making a general donation or simply sharing the Save A Brain love with your community. Every dollar goes a long way as we aim to hit our goal of $6,000 to make $12,000! We highly recommend you follow us for the launch of our new podcast, enter our weekly giveaways and help us break the stigma surrounding these invisible injuries.

The money raised for BIAM goes to continuing to build out our programming. We have been starting to implement new programming this year in 2025. I'd love for you to share what those programs are and what they do for the brain injury community.

K: We have a spreadsheet of over 100 organizations all over the world that are in need of helmets for children so we are expanding our Happy Helmets program to help move the needle on the helmet shortage epidemic. Another one of our give back initiatives is Brain Box where we donate boxes full of healing essentials to help aid in someone's recovery and make it easier. Recently we created our educational workshop, The Brain Factory, that takes all of the information about the brain and makes it more digestible so we can learn together. Last but not least, our new podcast, The Head Quarters. We want to break the stigma about the number one injury and create a safe space for everyone.

What has been a stand out moment for you doing this work over the past few years?

K: Every day that we get to exist and connect with people to save a brain is a stand out moment. I never thought that we would still be here today and we don’t know what the future will hold so really just soaking in every moment as the stand out moment.

M: Any parting words?

K: We only live one life and we only get one brain so let's give a shit about our brain and our friends' brains. Also support the causes that you care about because it takes so much work behind the scenes and this non-profit life ain’t easy. Parting on thanking everyone for supporting us because we would not be here with any of you!
