SLUSHIES 2024 — FORWARD LEAN AWARD

  |   SLUSH STAFF

Snowboarding isn’t a science. Well one could argue that to explain how it physically works via science, but as far as the way the industry works? No way. Part of what makes snowboarding so appealing is the lack of specific ramifications for what makes something special.

We personally feel the “art vs. sport” argument is rather played out,  but it certainly makes this time of year, when trying to award snowboarding’s most prominent figures, challenging. So while we acknowledge there were likely performances this last year that you may personally feel are being left out, this is our best stab at quantifying that which is intentionally unquantifiable.

FORWARD LEAN NOMINEES:

The initiatives in snowboarding that are making a real difference. Bigger than the riding itself, it’s more about the message these initiates give to the community and world at large.

Uninvited Invitational

The Uninvited Invitational, created by Jess Kimura, was a groundbreaking event in women's snowboarding, held at Woodward Tahoe from April 13-15, 2023. Originating from Kimura's film series "The Uninvited," this competition aimed to challenge gender biases in the sport and offer a more robust platform for female athletes. More than just a contest, it fostered a community spirit and celebrated women's contributions to snowboarding. The event underscored the importance of inclusivity, reflecting Kimura's personal journey and commitment to enhancing opportunities for female athletes in the sport.

Burton Mystery Series

The Burton Mystery Series emphasizes creativity, self-expression, and caters to all skill levels–prioritizing fun and community over competition. During the Winter 2022/Spring 2023 season, the Mystery Series hosted 21 events globally, including Austria, China, Finland, France, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Canada, and the United States. These events celebrate snowboarding as a sport and lifestyle, focusing on inclusivity, accessibility, and bringing together professionals and beginners in a supportive environment.

WE ARE MENTAL

"We Are Mental," initiated by Laura Rogoski, is a mental health-focused project highlighted by her creation of the "Mental" zine. This comprehensive guide offers various resources, including tips, exercises, jokes, art, and personal stories, aimed at assisting individuals with both physical and emotional challenges. Additionally, the initiative includes weekly mental health check-ins via Zoom, fostering a supportive community for open discussion and mental health awareness. Rogoski's project underscores the importance of mental wellbeing in sports, providing a platform for shared experiences and support
